This is a great cookbook if you like dutch oven cooking. The recipes are not overly complicated or pricey so that is nice. There is a good variety in this book and I am just learning how to cook with a dutch oven so it is good for beginners as well.
I bought this based on the rave reviews but it's not for me. There are no pictures, no nutritional information (sodium content, etc.) and the recipes seem to rely heavily on canned and processed ingredients.
The Good: This book is intended for indoor cooking. With 2 small kids under 6, I won't be trekking anywhere with my heavy cast iron pots unless it's my backyard and for that I might as well stay indoors away from the Texas mosquitoes. This book's purpose is to provide indoor cast iron cooking recipes. It starts out by providing a good 20 pages on the history of cast iron, its applications, variations, utility, etc. It also provides a beginner's guide to purchasing, researching, and caring for your cast iron cookware. Each recipe provides "tips" whether they be cooking tips on how to vary the recipe without killing it, or substitution tips that won't alter the recipe. With the exception of the bread section, the majority of the recipes require only basic, easily sourced ingredients. All can easily be found on a single trip to a large grocery chain. The only possible exception being some of the fish depending on your geography. For me personally, the bread section is not something I delve into regularly and so those are ingredients I don't typically have on hand.The NOT so good: a lot of the recipes (polenta, pancakes, other sticky pan-type meals) shouldn't necessarily be tried out on the non-enamel dutch oven, especially if you've just purchased it and are learning to cook on it. I only have non-enamel cast iron pans and quickly learned that these pans needed to be broken in with greasy, meaty meals first to avoid stuck on issues with some more delicate items. I didn't see this mentioned at all in the book. There are NO corresponding pictures for the recipes or even for a few of them. I like to use pictures as a guide for how my meal should look when I'm done (consistency, etc). It's a useful tool also for quickly scanning a recipe and seeing if it's appetizing enough for my entire family.OVERALL: I would purchase again or give as a gift. It's has a large breadth of recipes and is organized very well providing enough insight and tips for the novice.
Wonderful book. I'm new to Dutch oven cookery and look forward to trying a lot of these recipes. Easy to understand and not a lot of fancy hard to find ingredients.
Great mix of recipes and a decent how-to on taking care of your Dutch oven. Loved the ideas in this book. It's not your beautiful glossy, coffee-table-esque cookbook, but rather a matte style, informative, yet chic valuable resource for Dutch oven first-timers.
Recipes are nice, but would have been better, if there were pictures not just the written recipe.

I love to cook and I'm just learning how to cook in a Dutch oven. We spend many months on our boat cruising and Dutch oven cooking is awesome especially for seafood. I particularly enjoy the bread recipes for the boat. The dessert recipes are very special. Very grateful for this book.
This was a gift to go along with a dutch oven. As far as I know the recipient is happy with it.
