I built this chicken tractor in the spring of 2016 and the plans are really good. I made some small modifications and added 2 perches length wise to allow the birds a chance to get off the grass. They sleep there every night. I have layers in this tractor and have duplicated the front door side on the rear to allow nest boxes. I haven't figured out how to convert this into a house for the winter yet but I have a few ideas. If I had to do it over I would have purchased my wheels before cutting my skids as I miscalculated the tire size too large and had to step down to a smaller diameter, not a big deal but my yard has some uneven parts and a larger wheel would have been better. I am considering making a cantilever front wheels but haven't gotten to that yet. Installed game cameras on two corners as predators that dig can and will and did get under. It's fun to watch the video. I used 1/4 hardware cloth on the entire coop and fastened it with a crown stapler. It's really tough and no predators have been able to move the metal at all. Used spring loaded hinges to make the door close behind me. Move it every day, anything longer and they will take down the grass to nothing. Sometimes i move it twice a day. Fresh poop smells but once it dries and is a day or two old, you can't really smell much. Painting the wood parts inside and out a dark green made it blend in nicely and the white tarp looks pretty cool, I used black hinges and hardware.I can't say enough good things about this chicken tractor design, John really did his homework. It's well worth the price, read it twice and build it.
I can not recommend this book enough! I met John several years ago and fell in love with his chicken and the way he raised them. Fast forward a few years and I found myself owning a large farm and there was no question in my mind that I would build his tractors and follow his plan.We planned out our year and built 3 tractors in the spring. By mid summer we had built 3 more. We had a very successful broiler year using these plans. My morning chores were so easy to do by myself. The tractors were also a big hit with our customers. When they see the attention to detail it really shows how well the chickens are being cared for. These tractors quickly became a topic of conversations around town.Not only does this book lay out everything needed to build the tractors, it includes invaluable information regarding pasture rotation, feed, predators, and all the other little questions that come with deciding to raise pastured poultry. If you are thinking of building a chicken tractor, this book is a must have!
Quick and easy to follow read with great info and illustrations. The tractors are the best looking and most functional I have seen thus far. Watching Johns youtube videos inspired me to purchase this and start raising our own chickens! Whether you are competent when it comes to construction or not this book has easy step by step instructions and even a shopping list so all the guess work is taken out of the process. Thank you John and keep up the good work!
John Suscovich makes the process of raising your own chickens easy. I certainly appreciate all of the work he has put into his YouTube VLOG, and he has made the whole process of raising poultry in your back yard easy. This short book clearly outlines the process of building his chicken tractor design. Currently I have 25 Red Ranger broilers in my tractor, and I plan to use it in the spring and fall.My only suggestions for the next edition of the book is to give more details on building the door. I had no problems figuring it out on my own, but someone with less experience might struggle with this part. Otherwise, I am totally delighted.
This book is now in my top 5 farm books to learn from! Hands down this is an awesome, easy read chicken book. Love the writing, it was relatable to the average beginning farmer like me. If and when this author writes another book on a different farm venture...I'll definitely purchase the book. Also you can't get a better deal...I purchased the physical book and was offered the kindle book for just a few dollars. Yep I bought them both.
I found John Suscovich on YouTube several months ago, and enjoyed his highly informative and entertaining videos. I decided to give his book a try and was not disappointed. It is written in a very similar style to his videos, easy to follow and understand with thorough explanation of his process and experiences. If you have watched his videos, pretty much all of the information is there for free, but the book is still worth it for the detailed construction information. If you are interested in starting to raise chickens, for personal use or for profit, this book is a worthy read.
I made this all by myself! Simple design & easy to understand. I don't have a lot of wood working experience & was nervous about what the final result would be but it looks great. Don't skip the part about why he chose the material he did, there's important stuff in there :) This will be our first season using these chicken tractors & we're excited to get our Pastured Poultry up & running.
I wanted to read this book since I am going to be Pasture Raising my own Broilers. I really like his Utube channel, so I bought the book. I am going to use his plans to build a "Chicken Tractor". I am in the process of starting a chicken farm here in California. I know the most heavily regulated State in the Country. So wish me luck. I like the design. I like the look of the "Tractors" sitting in the fields. Function and look mean a lot. I know I could have built the low to the ground kind, but I want them to look good too. These fit that bill.
