Outstanding intellectual journey of science, history and philosophy to develop the systems view of life. While the book is categorized as science oriented given the authors' physics and cell biology backgrounds, the Systems View of Life is so much more than science. The underlying theories apply to all aspects of planetary activity such as law, economics, society, government etc. The essence of the book is the disconnect between the non-linear planetary processes based on relationships, forms, feed back loops and our linear models that stem from a mechanistic and material world view. This disconnect explains why humanity faces so many ecological and social problems. We see ourselves as independent from nature and act accordingly, yet we have created a economic system that is destroying the life giving features of this planet. The book provides the historical development from Newtonian mechanistic thinking to an evolving holistic approach and how that transition occurred. Even if you don't have a science background the authors present the material in a coherent way. This is a must read if you are interested in complexity and systems theory or if you are looking at issues of sustainability.
I cannot possibly recommend this book enough. We live in a time where all current systems of human thought from physics to politics are dominated by a set of underlying assumptions, that are mostly outdated and no longer work in a very different world that is more interdependent and connected than ever before in human history.It is in this context that Fritjof Capra presents many ideas and concepts involved in systems thinking, involving a holistic approach that recognizes the organic unity and interconnection between all things. It calls for a complete paradigm shift in our understanding of reality that takes entire systems in account, rather than only considering their component parts.A must read for anyone that is increasing confused by all of the seeming chaos and madness present in today's world.
Very happy to see this book in a textbook format so that the knowledge is passed along as a new way of approaching science to solve societal problems. You'll find more depth in Professor Capra's other works on the subjects introduced and covered here. It sets up a nice situation where the reader is introduced to a number of unique ways of seeing topics that most do not know or appreciate yet. This will be the thinking of the future. I only hope it comes sooner rather than later. Get the book. If you're a professor - use the book for your class. Spread the messages it contains and we'll have more luck solving our problems moving forward.
In my opinion, there should be a course that is taught along with this textbook that is prerequisite for every undergraduate degree. The book does a good job of explaining interdependent origination from an interdisciplinary scientific point of view. We desperately need to overcome our mechanistic, binary view of the world and our lived sense of separateness from it in order to ensure the longevity of our, along with every other, species on this planet. Education and inner reflection are keys to overcome the maelstrom of conditioning that has been imposed upon us all. One can only hope that the modern era zeitgeist which has prevailed since the Industrial Revolution will give way to a more holistic/systemic/cooperative way of life. In all probability, the future generations of all sentient beings are dependent upon it. As a fitting conclusion to the book, Capra and Luisi offer us an inspiring quote from Vaclav Havel:"The kind of hope that I often think about...I understand above all as a state of mind, not a state of the world. Either we have hope within us or we don't; it is a dimension of the soul, and it's not essentially dependent on some particular observation of the world or estimate of the situation...[Hope] is not the conviction that something will turn out well, but the certainty that something makes sense, regardless of how it turns out."
At 498 pages, this is no small tome. I have not finished it, but Capra and Luisi scan a huge swath of scientific thinking and delve into human behavior to propose a new paradigm for living with eco-literacy as its core. This book is the "text" for the Capra Course. If you want a brief overview, this isn't it. However, a brief overview is impossible when the objective is a huge shift in your worldview. I have a very similar program, and this is a great resource book. Capra and Luisi have dug into aspects of our environmental crises that I did not find by digging on my own -- not enough time.
I’ve been studying complex systems, systems thinking, and nonlinear dynamical systems theory since the 70’s. FC is also a favorite. So I was delighted to find a holistic book about the entire field. The book started out on point and took a nice broad view, but then lost me later as it drifted into the vague applications of systems theory. Still, I enjoyed it. 4 stars for effort, 3 for execution, but a worthy read nonetheless.
The authors do an excellent job in looking at LIFE as a total system. I especially liked that Spirituality is not the problem, it is organized Religion that creates a problems and conflicts with Science.
This holistic view of life is Capra's magnum opus. His treatment of all aspects of the nature of life spans the physical, biological and spiritual dimensions of life and our interconnectedness with the environment and with each other. It is a worthy successor to Erwin Schrödinger's "What is Life?".
