Amazon.com Review

"She was homeschooling gone amok." "She was an alien." "Her parents were circus acrobats." These are only a few of the theories concocted to explain Stargirl Caraway, a new 10th grader at Arizona's Mica Area High School who wears pioneer dresses and kimonos to school, strums a ukulele in the cafeteria, laughs when there are no jokes, and dances when there is no music. The whole school, not exactly a "hotbed of nonconformity," is stunned by her, including our 16-year-old narrator Leo Borlock: "She was elusive. She was today. She was tomorrow. She was the faintest scent of a cactus flower, the flitting shadow of an elf owl." In time, incredulity gives way to out-and-out adoration as the student body finds itself helpless to resist Stargirl's wide-eyed charm, pure-spirited friendliness, and penchant for celebrating the achievements of others. In the ultimate high school symbol of acceptance, she is even recruited as a cheerleader. Popularity, of course, is a fragile and fleeting state, and bit by bit, Mica sours on their new idol. Why is Stargirl showing up at the funerals of strangers? Worse, why does she cheer for the opposing basketball teams? The growing hostility comes to a head when she is verbally flogged by resentful students on Leo's televised Hot Seat show in an episode that is too terrible to air. While the playful, chin-held-high Stargirl seems impervious to the shunning that ensues, Leo, who is in the throes of first love (and therefore scornfully deemed "Starboy"), is not made of such strong stuff: "I became angry. I resented having to choose. I refused to choose. I imagined my life without her and without them, and I didn't like it either way." Jerry Spinelli, author of Newbery Medalist Maniac Magee, Newbery Honor Book Wringer, and many other excellent books for teens, elegantly and accurately captures the collective, not-always-pretty emotions of a high school microcosm in which individuality is pitted against conformity. Spinelli's Stargirl is a supernatural teen character--absolutely egoless, altruistic, in touch with life's primitive rhythms, meditative, untouched by popular culture, and supremely self-confident. It is the sensitive Leo whom readers will relate to as he grapples with who she is, who he is, who they are together as Stargirl and Starboy, and indeed, what it means to be a human being on a planet that is rich with wonders. From Publishers Weekly

Part fairy godmother, part outcast, part dream-come-true, the star of Spinelli's latest novel possesses many of the mythical qualities as the protagonist of his Maniac Magee. As narrator Leo Borlock reflects on his junior year in a New Mexico high school, Stargirl takes center stage. Even before she appears at Mica High, Spinelli hints at her invisible presence; readers, like Leo, will wonder if Stargirl is real or some kind of mirage in the Sonoran Desert. By describing the girl through the eyes of a teen intermittently repulsed by and in love with her, Spinelli cunningly exposes her elusive qualities. Having been homeschooled, Stargirl appears at Mica High dressed as a hippie holdover and toting a ukulele, which she uses to serenade students on their birthdays; she marks holidays with Halloween candy and Valentine cards for all. As her cheerleading antics draw record crowds to the school's losing football team's games, her popularity skyrockets, yet a subtle foreboding infuses the narrative and readers know it's only a matter of time until she falls from grace. For Leo, caught between his peers and his connection to Stargirl, the essential question boils down to one offered to him by a sage adult friend: "Whose affection do you value more, hers or the others'?" As always respectful of his audience, Spinelli poses searching questions about loyalty to one's friends and oneself and leaves readers to form their own answers. Ages 12-up. (Aug.) Homeschooled for most of her life, Stargirl shows up in public high school and really shakes things up. She’s a free spirit who cares deeply about everyone else. But there is something very wrong with her according to other students. She doesn’t conform. And not conforming in public school is bad.Told from the point of view of her boyfriend, Leo, Stargirl is a quick, but emotional read. All teens should read it because pushing others to conform is common in school, but not a good idea. You never know what you might miss that would make your life better when those pushed become (or pretend to be) what you want them to be.

I enjoyed this book. I thought it was fun to read and I was interested to see what would happen to Stargirl. I was reading to my sheltered 4th and 5th graders, so some of the relationship stuff [kissing] was too much for a few of them. They were not as interested in the book, but that is my fault for trying it on a younger/immature group.

Fabulous book for girls 8-14 to read. Stargirl is very comfortable with who she is and embraces herself fully. Great role model for girls who are kind, smart, and not 'in the pack'. I give this to many young and YA girls to read and they always love it.

Read this book a long time ago. Moved and left the book in our house so I didn't got to re-read it. I chose this for a book club so I had to order it again (cheaper than flying to my house). It was a delight to read again. I picked up so much more insight the second time around. For me this is a life changing book. Bullying happens (on various scales) and it is good to be aware. I also love Stargirl's character. If I could be like her then I would be doing pretty well-we all would. Such a poignant, well-written, timely, relevant little book.

Summer reading project for my grandson. We have layered reading so I get to enjoy the books as well. Star girl is one I would recommend. Great value teaching in there. Be sure to discuss life experiences with your child while reading. We did.

If you like humor, love, and peer pressure first hand, this is the story for you. I goes through the emotions of wanting to be diffrent but not ,because of being scared of what others think.. I absolutely can't tell you how much this is true.. Every school has that one person who no one thinks much about, but you'd be surprised at what they can do. this is Stargirl.. I can't wait to read the second..

This story is about a girl who lives outside the lines; who dances in the rain without an umbrella; who has a rat for a friend; who erases herself so she can blend into a moment in time. This is a story that is told in the first person narrative by a boy who is not the first person. This is about what happens in High School when someone weird walks the halls. After having been immersed within the pages of some serious readings, this book was a breath of fresh air. Stargirl swept me off my feet into a world I knew was always in me. I lost track of that world as I grew into adulthood where ‘life’ somehow made me forget what was real. Stargirl brought it all back.A very nice YA telling. Very nice indeed.

Spinelli, J. (2000). Stargirl. New York: Dell Laurel-Leaf Synopsis: At Mica High School everyone eats the same, dresses the same, talks the same, acts the same and no one is different. That is until the day that Stargirl shows up. Stargirl is an eccentric, kind home schooled student who does not conform to the same set of values or ideals as the typical students at Mica High School. She has no understanding of what is popular, nor does she realize the invisible social and cultural boundaries that are present around her. Stargirl plays birthday songs for her new classmates, leaves surprises for unsuspecting peers, and even displays random acts of kindness that go unknown. For some time the students are fearful and embarrassed of this stranger. However soon, the individuality of Stargirl spreads to other students. Leo falls head over heels in love with this flower in the desert. He loves everything about especially her individualism. After a fretful incident at basketball game, Stargirl's popularity begins to plummet. She is outcast and shunned by her classmates. In a desperate attempt to save his face and Stargirl's reputation, Leo asks Stargirl to do the unthinkable, to become normal. After a period of normalcy, Stargirl realizes the sacrifice she is making. Leo and his classmates are shocked how Stargirl's presence has changed their lives. Evaluation: Spinelli's expertly written book brings light to the sensitive issues of nonconformity and popularity within the young adult setting of high school. His text encourages readers to honor differences and individualism. It is an excellent read aloud at the late elementary and middle grades. In addition, Stargirl is a must read for highschool students. One of the golden rules is to love thy neighbor. In Spinelli's book, the invisible social and cultural boundaries become apparent to readers. Displaying unacknowledged random acts of kindness are clearly an unwritten undertone of this book. Readers will likely have a desire to try something extraordinary to see how if affects the lives of those around them. Educators will likely use this text with middle and high school level readers to discuss the meaning of "normal" and popularity within school settings and how the social and cultural boundaries affect the social/emotional well-being of their peers. The author's language is light and airy while bringing such heart-felt topics to the surface in a sensitive manner. Middle and high school level readers are likely to find strong connections from their own lives to this book.
