About the Author
Laurette Ryan PMA-CPT, original background was in dance. starting at age 2. Pilates was introduced through this avenue in her teen years. Laurette loved to dance, but honestly, “never liked to exercise and Pilates, felt more like moving with intention rather than exercise.†Laurette is a certified Pilates teacher through The Pilates Method Alliance. She is also certified by the American Council on Exercise as a Personal Trainer and is a massage therapist. Laurette started teaching dance and fitness classes at age 15, she attended the Boston Conservatory of Dance, in 1980. Laurette has taught movement and exercise classes for over 30 years. In 1993 she developed the “Dancer Workout†a Pilates-based exercise class. Laurette is the Owner of Balancepoint Pilates Teacher Training and Balancepoint Studios with satellite programs in Massachusetts, North Carolina and South Carolina since 1999. Laurette is the author of “Ready for Pilates for Everybody†- a pre-Pilates book for newcomers to the method. She also enjoys writing articles on Pilates and fitness. As the title suggests, this is definitely BASIC cuing. I guess I was hoping to learn something new. It took about twenty minutes to read cover to cover then I passed it on to a friend who is a new Pilates instructor. This book is really more like a teacher training handout.
I. LOVE. THIS. BOOK. I have been teaching for many years and I seriously carry this everywhere with me when I am teaching. I just like to thumb through the incredibly short text that is packed with a lot of great, simple, but easily forgotten cuing tips. When we teach for a long time, we can get stuck in a rut or in our own ways of doing things. I've relied on this little gem to remind me to try new approaches to teaching. ALL first-time teachers should have this and so should those of us who are more experienced.
As a new Pilates student/teacher, I ordered this book trying to learn the cuing for Pilates. It does the job okay, but I am not overly impressed.
um...wow. I don't write reviews on products I don't care for, but here I have to make an exception. This book has poor grammar, incomplete sentences, and misspellings. Even the formatting is inconsistent. Honestly, it seems as though the author sat down one evening, had a glass of wine, and decided to write a book on cuing and then self published the same evening. Unfortunately during the process, Spellcheck and the Grammar & Formatting Wizards were turned off and there was no editor. Here are a couple excerpts, "Most student can read how to do an exercise, copy an exercise tape or just do what someone taught them long ago." "The body has a consciousness throughout, through and through at the cellular level and more.' If you find yourself in a situation where you are called upon to teach a physical exercise class, and you have never, ever done so before or even participated in group exercise, this book will help you. If you are a professional with any form of training or any experience on the mat, in the gym or at the studio, you'd be better off spending your money at the juice bar.
I thought it was more specific on how to cue each movement.
Great read with lots of good suggestions to try!
