She lives with her husband and twins, a boy and girl, born after fertility treatments."—Newsday"Solutions [covered in Navigating the Land of If] range from having fertility treatment, using donor gametes, surrogacy, adoption and living child-free. The "IF" in the title of the book not only is connected to the online definition for infertility, but also refers to the notion that there are so many ifs involved in the problem, [Ford] writes in her book. “There are what ifs and if onlys and if this, then thats. …Being here is all about living in uncertainty and doubt and wonder and hope… "—Jewish Weekly

I am a loyal reader of Melissa Ford's blog, and I was thrilled to hear that she had written a book. Even though this is my second journey through infertility and I am reasonably familiar with the topic, I knew I could rely on Melissa for a comprehensive and truthful IF guide, marked with her wit and candor. I purchased it as a "refresher" before heading back to the RE for help conceiving another child, and it served its purpose well. Some of my favorite aspects: it covers the three main areas of IF (emotional/physical/financial) unlike previous books I have read that tackle only one; she cheers you on and makes you smile even while talking about poking yourself with needles; she breaks down the complex treatment options into readable sections so you can digeset the overview; the practical advice on handling comments from others and relationships with "fertiles"; and as she has been-there-done-that, she shares her own struggles that make the information feel like it's coming from a friend. This book is very appropriately titled, as it is a the perfect guide to navigating the various intertwining aspects of IF. Well done.

(Background: I am infertile as a result of endometriosis and am an adoptive mother.)When I first ordered this book and received it I didn't think I would read it at all, since in my mind I am residing in Mamaland and I'm not marooned in IF anymore. I intended to tuck it away and eventually give it to a friend who was beginning her IF journey. But I love books and couldn't resist thumbing through the pages, getting a feel for the book's layout and style. Immediately the chapter on adoption caught my eye and I read from that chapter to the end of the book the first night the book came in the mail, then went back the next day and started reading from the beginning.(I did end up using the book for its intended purpose, as well. As I'm typing this I don't have my copy of the book to refer to; I've lent it to a friend who, unfortunately, was dumped into the land of IF recently and is still in the diagnosis acquisition phase.)Anyhow, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and got a lot more out of it than I thought I would. I admire Mel a lot, so I don't mean that I didn't expect her book to be great. It's just that I didn't think I could learn anything about infertility from a book that I hadn't already read online. I was wrong! It was an entertaining and informative read.

I really enjoyed this book. It was very helpful and articulated a lot of difficult feelings about 'infertility' that are hard to explain often.. Also a very easy read, the author feels approachable.. that's refreshing for a fertility book as so many of those can be dry reads. I didn't like how her "fun tips and side notes" kept interrupting the flow of the chapters though, often you would have to turn a page and then turn back to read the tip, then turn forward again to continue on in the normal chapter.. that got annoying after a while. So, the content is great, just the formatting could have used a little work.

I'm a long-time blog reader of a number of infertility blogs. I happily bought this book for my sister, who was undergoing treatment for repeat miscarriage (RM). Perhaps the hype from the blogosphere built it up too much. The pluses- it is a handy overview if you're new to the world of infertility, better for those who have trouble getting pregnant than those who struggle to stay pregnant. The minuses- Her advice about generally trying not to worry when you do get pregnant is at best insensitive for those with RM. And also inaccurate. If you've had 3 miscarriages, and you're over 30, - your chances of another miscarriage are pretty high. She also repeats some irritating misinformation commonly thrown around in the popular press. There is nothing magic about age 35 where fertility suddenly drops off and risk of downs syndrome spikes. Its a steady change over time. While these issues may seem petty, i'd posit they are no more petty than a number of the issues she is very sensitive and thorough about.

I'll keep it short, but I needed this book. I'm so appreciative that the author wrote it. She hit the nail on the head: infertility is a whole different world and it's impossible to understand unless you're going through it. For the first time, I felt like someone "got it."

This is a must-have guide for anyone who has been trying to build a family, unsuccessfully, for more than a month. It gives both sound medical advice on what could be going on, how you'll be diagnosed and treated, and wise counsel on how to deal with the emotions you're likely to experience.Plus, there are laughs and levity in this book about a very serious subject. The author speaks directly to you and helps you navigate this difficult trip you probably never thought you would take.

I have read enough books to have a decent grasp on what is involved in the various treatments offered for fertility. This is the only book that has directly addressed the emotional aspect associated with each procedure and with the entire process. Thanks to the author for admitting that this "painless procedure" crap is just that... crap. Every single procedure has some level of pain associated, both physical and emotional. When you are tired of everyone minimizing your experience, this is the book that will help.

This is The Book for anyone experiencing issues with family building--or for anyone who loves someone who is wrestling with these issues. Thorough, accurate, excellent. And funny and insightful too.
