The Justice Calling is a profound, theologically grounded work that invites us to return to the biblical narrative that reveals a God who is not indifferent to human suffering, but who chooses to enter into it and take it upon Himself. Before reading this book, I have yet to see such a beautiful, thorough exposition on how the God of the Old and New Testaments is seeking to restore shalom and justice in a broken world--and how He is inviting us as His people to join Him in this work.To bring us on this journey, the authors have wisely and carefully knit passages of Scripture, personal experiences, and stories of victims of slavey and other forms of violence that International Justice Mission has worked to rescue and restore. What I love most about this book is how Bethany and Kristen remind us that our actions to intervene on behalf of those suffering must be based on a biblical understanding of His Sabbath rest and not a reliance upon our sporadic bursts of effort.This is a fantastic resource for anyone who desires to deepen their understanding of our calling to seek God’s Kingdom and His righteousness and justice. I especially recommend it for church leaders, small groups, theology students, and those who daily work to confront darkness and violence in our world.Let us rediscover that justice is not a buzzword or popular topic, but a core aspect of God’s character and our call as His people. I finished this book a few weeks ago and I'm still contemplating its contents. This is a very easy read that makes a great argument on why social justice fits into every Christian's life. I've been bringing this book up frequently in conversations since I finished it. I'm definitely glad I read it and may buy a clean copy to share with friends, as mine is now quite marked up.
This book encapsulates so well my heart for justice and how our passion to see it upheld comes from God Himself because of who he is. Very thankful for these women who were brave enough to sit down and chronicle their spiritual journeys.
Really liked most of the book and it's emphasis on what I call social justice. There was a bit more information on specific programs than needed.
What I love about this book is that it is not simply a biblical perspective on justice, storytelling about the scale and scope of the world's injustice, or practical suggestions for the church's preparation for and advancement of the work of justice, but all three together. Hoang and Johnson help us understand why God's judgments against injustice and unrighteousness are good news - they are never merely 'payback' but are teleologically oriented toward the restoration of shalom. But they also teach the church how to become invested and stay invested in the calling to seek justice over the long haul.They are not pollyannaish about how difficult it is not to become discouraged, despairing, apathetic, and cynical given the pervasiveness of injustice in the world. By their own attestation, 'there are more slaves in the world today than during the four hundred years of the translating slave trade combined'. For that reason, they exhort the church to cultivate the practices that enable a life marked by the pursuit of justice as much as they exhort the church to do the work of justice. I especially love their description and recommendation of the practice of lament. White evangelicals especially no longer understand this practice or why they should do it. Hoang and Johnson argue that lament is 'wholly distinct from despair and nothing akin to whining, grumbling, arguing, or shouting into nothingness. What makes lament distinct from other forms of complaint or despondency is the intentional direction of lament, the subject to which lament points. Lament is 'cry directed to God. It is the cry of those who see the truth of the world's deep wounds and the cost of seeking peace. It is the prayer of those who are deeply disturbed by the way things are...Together, we need to learn the language of lament before rushing to try to find solutions for the problems we see. Lament opens the way for us to name the brokenness, to try sit and mourn with those who mourn. Lament helps us to become aware of ways that we might be contributing to the problems we see, and it prepares the ground for the long-lasting but slow-going work of transformation'. What a gift to the church: a theologically rich and elegantly written book, interlaced with riveting and heartbreaking stories and practical, life-altering admonitions to the church to devote ourselves to the work of the kingdom.
