This is a book you will proudly display on your coffee table. It has memories of old building torn down all over new york, like the old madison Square garden, the hippodrome, central park casino,Luchows restaurant. It describes each in detail and tells you exactly when they were demolished. What actually made me really excited about buying this book were the amazing old photographs of all these places. For the photos alone its worth the price of admission. You will not be disappointed by the book, unless you don't have a pulse.
This is a great book. I purchased it as a gift for our adult son as a coffee table book as he loves in NYC and is interested in the architecture there.I learned of this book from a friend and have really enjoyed seeing how things used to look in some of the most popular places in the City. Its' amazing how many times things have turned over.
Nice book. Unfortunately, it was packaged with other items and not protected so it cover was damaged. If I bought this used I wouldn't mind, but when purchasing a new item, it should at least look new.
The city that never stops evolving. New York has to be the city that has most changed it's identity since it's inception by the Dutch. Only Las Vegas rivals New York's need to be new on a regular basis. With that constant need to modernize so much is lost. This book allows us to glimpse the past and perhaps mourn the loss. but also to appreciate the metamorphosis that New York seems to constantly undergo, social butterfly that she is.
Very informative. Well laid out. Very enjoyable read, with intriguing photos. Great buy. So, if your interested in NYC history, and a little mystery, just buy it, you'll like it.
Several sections of the book have been duplicated several times with the same page numbers repeating. Typical Chinese quality! Guess we can't print anything in the US any longer. Anyway, the publishers apparently never proof read the finished product. Let's see if they rush to replace mine..... I would bet that all current stock of this item is defective.
Lost New York is a book for those who love New York City, architecture, or the history, in black and white, of buildings we cannot visit anymore. Like Penn Station, pictured on the cover, these grand old structures became victims of time and the wrecking ball. They were built in an age of careful detail, from keystones atop grand windows to gargoyles and grotesques. Along with public buildings, homes of the fabulously rich are included: a Vanderbilt mansion here, an Astor domicile there. Lost New York catalogs these all pictorially and in text, relating tales of buildings men made of stone, replaced today by the glass and steel of skyscrapers. A veritable, virtual tour of another era.
Great book! But it will make you sad thinking of all the lost buildings. Thank goodness there is now a preservation board.
