With this book, Alex provides freelance illustrators (or designers in general if you will) a valuable foundation to get a more solid and smoothly running business.In the beginning the information is a bit dry to swallow and to set up, but that is simply because I have more fun in creating than doing business. That said, getting more and more engaged with the mindset Alex provides, it's getting more and more fun to connect to great people who are willing to pay for your design services as clients. The 5th star could be a more fresh and energizing design for the layout. It's a bit hard to read it smoothly and get all the information in your head. It would be nice to have some infographics to get across the information in a more visual way. Illustrators think visually after all.This guide is very helpful once you know your identity as a creative and clearly know what you want to do and with whom you want to work with or for. Every illustrator should read this guide and implement these basics into their business as a daily habit. Thanks Alex!
In How to Get Illustration Clients, Alex Mathers does not waste time and goes straight for the jugular. His direct attitude and advice are exactly what's needed to bring clients home.As a freelancer of several years who has recently been gravitating from one field to another, this useful book has reminded me of what needs to be done and it equiped me with tools to meet my targets, some so obvious and efficient I had never thought of them before. Best of all; although I've just begun applying a few new tricks learnt from Alex, they actually work and are beginning to produce results. As a longtime illustrator, I've been feeling I'm rolling the same rock up the hill and still not getting it to fall over the other side for far too long. This book really does give you the information to make that next push. It's very much what I've been looking for and I'm confident it will help me get to the next level as a professional artist. I've found several places for change in my approach that I honestly wouldn't have thought of on my own. This book is good, I appreciate the work that author did, but...If you are looking for step by step strategies of finding clients you will be disappointed. The main tip of the book is - you need to have 150 contacts ( friends, family members, coworkers, ect.) and engage with this 150 people, meet with them, send them gifts, keeping them "warm" and then ask for job. I found this tip little bit wierd. I am busy at work 8 hours a day, so I barely can find time to meet with my couple of friends, so how can I suppose to engage with 150? Anyway I appreciate the authors attempt to cover such an important topic, there are not a lot of books you can find about it.
Very good, precise information. But spaced out and padded up to real 'book' size. It feels like a self-published cheapie. Physically slight and insubstantial.Good intelligence but, unfortunately has the feel an overpriced quickie.
Since I first discovered his work in 2010, Alex Mathers has continuously provided creative professionals with clear, honest and tremendously useful materials for pushing their careers forward.As far as I'm aware, this latest ebook confronts the common concerns of today's illustration community like none other. Alex lays out a concise system for establishing your work within a crowded global industry.I sincerely believe that any hard-working artists can take their careers to the next level by utilizing this wellspring of practical knowledge.
At art school I was very happy to create and illustrate, without caring too much about illustration clients. Once finishing my education, I got a bit of a shock to realize, that it wasn't enough to paint pretty images, but that I would also built a network and get a working structure. This took a lot if time, at some point I found the Red Lemon Club and profited very much from it's newsletters and advice, ending up getting some coaching sessions and this book. If you want a short-cut to your networking and job-incoming, get this book and work yourself through it!
I started using Alex's method. Even upgraded his spreadsheet with some new functionality. It feels so much more meaningful to reach out intentionally and I've been getting lots of responses.
