Review

''A beautiful book, written and illustrated with a genuine sympathy...A serious and compelling re-creation.''--The Pacific Sun ''Remarkable insight in to the lives of the Ohlone Indians.''--San Francisco Chronicle ''Margolin conveys the texture of daily life, birth, marriage, death, war, the arts, and rituals, and he also discusses the brief history of the Ohlones under the Spanish, Mexican, and American regimes...Margolin does not give way to romanticism or political harangues, and the illustrations have a gritty quality that is preferable to the dreamy, pretty pictures that too often accompany texts like this.''--Choice ''One of three books that brought me the most joy over the past year.''-- Alice Walker''[Margolin] has written thoroughly and sensitively of the Pre-Mission Indians in a North American land of plenty. Excellent, well-written.'' --American Anthropologist

I taught this book for ten years as a public high school teacher. First off there is no such thing as the Ohlone Indians. The group went by the areas they lived in and they had no collective name for themselves. At first they were called the Costanoans by the Spanish for living along the coast of California. Later they became known as Ohlone, which was probably one village. The Ohlone were one of the major Native tribes in the San Francisco Bay Area inhabiting the East Bay and the San Francisco Peninsula. Malcolm Margolin does a great job describing their life. First and most important is the Bay Area environment. The area was full of resources from fish to birds to game to insects to plants and trees. This all shaped the Ohlone lifestyle from their religion based upon animal spirts to their lifestyle which was a migrating hunter gathering system based upon moving with the seasons to get food. Each part of their society is given a different chapter that usually starts off with a story before going into the details. The last chapter covers how the Ohlone were destroyed by the Spanish colonialists who put them into missions to convert them to Catholicism and their language, culture, etc. were all banned. The one major drawback of The Ohlone Way is that Margolin has idealized the tribe. For example in the chapter on warfare he writes that the Natives were not a warlike people and fighting was more stylized then anything. That’s contradicted by accounts of Spanish visitors, one Father Vicente Santa Maria sailed into the northern East Bay where he discovered hundreds of Ohlone fleeing from another Ohlone tribe that had burned down their village and forced them to leave. That kind of violence and conflict is completely absent from the book. Despite that, if you’re interested in California Indians and San Francisco Bay Area history the Ohlone Way is a good start.

I don't normally read books like this for pleasure, but this book was assigned to my cultural anthropology class by my professor whom I respect. The book offers a fairly comprehensive overview of what life may have been like for the Ohlone peoples before the time of the Spanish expeditions, and presents a relatively neutral view into their culture, of which what surprised me the most was their general attitude towards sexuality and reproduction. If you were assigned this book for a class, I wouldn't be too worried. It's a relatively short read, and a worthwhile one at that.

This is a fabulous classic which may turn your head around in a delightful way. The only reason I'm giving this edition four stars is because it has the new cover, but does not include the important afterword Margolin wrote years after writing the book when he was older and wiser.

This is one of the most interesting books I've read. It's a story of a dispersed Indian culture that was well adapted to their surroundings, living sustainably in a virtual Eden. But then along came the Spaniards who said, "We have a better way of doing things, and besides, we want to save your souls!" The Ohlone, who had a developed a social system that rarely led to war, were unable to resist, and essentially became extinct.

If you want to know what is was like to live like the Ohlone (the natives of San Francisco) then this is a must read. I love this book. Compeleted reading it right away.

The book is an easy read about a fascinating subject. It is difficult to know how much of the writing is factual and how much is embellishment due to a lack of citations. The book is well organized and edited. So considering the book for what it is, it is an enjoyable read and the author draws some interesting conclusions about Ohlone life.

Margolin does a great job creating a rich and deep image of what Ohlone life was like. This book goes into detail of many aspects of their life, from birth to death, but it reads like a story not a dry history book. I highly recommend reading this, especially if you live in the SF Bay Area.

Great read.
