About the Author
Lawrence M. Friedman was born in 1930, educated at the University of Chicago where he earned his law degree, and admitted to the Illinois bar in 1951. He received a graduate degree from the University of Chicago Law School in English legal history. After serving in the United States Army, he practiced with a law firm in Chicago and subsequently entered the teaching profession. He has taught at St. Louis University, the University of Wisconsin, and, since 1968, at Stanford University, where he is now Marion Rice Kirkwood Professor of Law. He is the author of Contract Law in America: A Social and Economic Case Study (1965); Government and Slum Housing: A Century of Frustration (1968); Law and the Behavioral Sciences (coeditor; 1969, 2nd edition, 1977); The Legal System: A Social Science Perspective (1975); Law and Society: An Introduction (1977); American Law and the Constitutional Order: Historical Perspectives (coeditor, 1978); Law and Social Change in Mediterranean Europe and Latin America (coeditor, 1979); The Roots of Justice: Crime and Punishment in Alameda County, California, 1870-1910 (coauthor, 1981); American Law (1984); Your Time Will Come (1985); and Total Justice (1985). He has contributed more than eighty articles to legal and associated journals. Professor Friedman is the past president of the Law and Society Association, and a past Fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences and of the Institute for Advanced Study in Berlin. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the recipient of a number of awards for writing and teaching. He is married and has two daughters.

This is, in my opinion, the best single volume history of American law (I'm a graduate of Harvard Law School and have taught law at schools in the US and abroad). But the print is so small I need a magnifying glass to read it. It should be in two or even three volumes, but of course it would then be much more expensive. So if you have keen eyesight, or a good magnifying glass, this is a great book.
I'll keep this brief: The title says it all. If you are looking for an excellent, in-depth introduction to the history of law in the U.S., then look no further. Tremendously readable, wonderfully informative, and above all, engaging; this book warrants not just one reading, but several. Read this book, study it, and you'll have taken an important first step towards not only a good layperson's understanding of the legal history of the U.S., but also an important step towards becoming an expert.Yes, it's that good. If a concise, yet richly detailed legal history is what you seek, this is it. Buy it and read it; you'll be glad you did.
Prior to reading this book, I had little understanding of the law. I saw it as a single, solid body of tradition, grounded in specific documents and interpreted through the operation of the legal system. My understanding was in some sense true, but this book opened my eyes to the vast complexity and richness of tradition woven into the system of law in the United States. I learned about the different legal systems, such as admiralty, chancery, equity, and common law, and how these systems operated historically in their respective regimes of power. I learned how common law largely came to subsume the other courts, how Napoleonic law relates to common law, and how Napoleonic systems developed in several states and changed to take on more common law characteristics. Above all Friedman impressed on me the basic premise of his book:"Despite a strong dash of history and idiosyncrasy, the strongest ingredient in American law, at any given time, is the present -- current emotions, real economic interests, and concrete political groups."Highly recommended. My understanding of law will never be the same.
I didn't buy this book for me, but for my son, as he was showing an interest in Law of some kind. When I looked through all that there was on Amazon, it was like WOW, where do I start? At the beginning of course. I figured he needed to know where we got our rules and laws in the United States. This book sounded ok. I was first worried it being to much for him to understand right off, but such was not the case. He said it was perfect! A friend of his is taking college courses in law for being a "Paralegal", and he wishes that he had that book to start off with. He told my son, that he wanted to read it as soon as my son was finished. The friend also told my son, that he wished that he started with something like this book. So I guess I made the right choice!
Concise, well-edited, and well worth the effort to consume the 585 pages of text. The book is a non-trivial read, but well-suited for the interested layman. There is also a well-structured bibliography for those who want to know more.
This book is a masterpiece of scholarship. It covers the law of the United from origins to contemporary times, thourgh clearly defined chapters/sections and very lucid writing. To any person interested in American law and/or history, this is a must read.
I went to law school years ago and wish they had given me this information then. It puts everything in context. Friedman is an excellent author and is thorough and insightful. I highly recommend this to anyone with any interest in the law.
