There are a number of German Genealogy guides that one should seriously consider reading. This one has one benefit that the others seem to lack and that is two chapters on German history. The rest of the volume is great starting point for those that haven't considered researching their German immigrant. My great grandfather was the one that I'm researching. This book helped a bit in finding some online sources that I knew about but forgot for Baden, Germany. Since I'm also considering a research trip at some point in the next couple of years, it was helpful in that regard as well.There are several typos in the text that don't, generally, get in the way. But be warned that if the sentence doesn't make sense, or has two of the same word together that it is just due to poor editing. I've seen worse - as it is becoming more common with what appears to be locally produced books.However, I do recommend this book for anything who is seriously considering researching their German ancestors - even if you are an intermediate researcher.
I am relatively new to genealogy, starting by going to a 2 day seminar in March of 2014 and now looking into my German grand-parentage. I also joined a German Genealogy interest group at the library. That being said, this is an easy to use guide and helps not only with background- at what was going on there in the time frame of when your ancestors left, but so much more. I found this at the library and liked it so much that I purchased a copy. It is a great resource to start the search. I have referred back to it often. So far I have been able to get church records on the internet for my grandmother, her parents, their children and their marriages and for 2 generations back from those. Now working to fill out those from other sources ie German civil records, military records, etc. This book was also recommended by the German interest group . Well done. Good for the beginner but also relevant to those who have been doing this for a long time. A definite jewel in my Genealogy home library!
Very helpful book for starting your research in Germany. A lot of good direction, includes addresses in Germany to write for records. The book even helps with sample formats for letters to different entities, advise on how much it may cost to obtain the records & how they prefer to be paid. Highly Recommend

This book is an invaluable guide for helping trace your German ancestors, it covers alot of resources, some you can find online, some free and some not.. but it helps open up avenues to your research. Solid, practical tips for researching genealogy in German families. Very helpful maps and history of Germany.
Lot of really good information in the book with web connections to help you on the way. I wish they had included a German dictionary and perhaps a detailed map section of the country.
I had been wondering if this would just be a duplicate of the other German genealogy book by the same author but, despite some duplication, there are a lot of other hints and ideas.
