To complete this second edition of my book I traveled to 23 different protected areas over a period of several years and photographed many aspects of animal behavior that I had never previously recorded. Some images--including a tapir crossing a stream, a hummingbird feeding in the rain, and a baby turtle scuttling across a pebbly beach--were ones I purposefully set out to get, and it was with great satisfaction that I was able to turn the preconception into reality. Other images, on the other hand, were the result of those surprise encounters that make this work even more exciting, including seeing a crested caracara hauling an egret across a lagoon, a toad fighting to escape the jaws of a parrot snake, and a puma staring down at me from a branch above a trail. My search for wild animals took me to enchanting and remote landscapes that few people ever see. I hiked the flank of Tenorio Volcano, where a river of turquoise water runs through the rainforest, marched through Curú Wildlife Refuge in darkness to photograph pelicans gliding past an isolated beach at sunrise, and reconnoitered the ocean between Caño Island and the Osa Peninsula in search of humpback whales. Great photographs accompanied by brief explanations of the objects photographed, describing the scene and/or species highlighted. Landscapes and a lot of animal closeups, including birds, insects, turtles, snakes, crocs, mammals, amphibians and many others.
We took a trip to Costa Rica last month. I saw this book while we were in Costa Rica but got it cheaper at Amazon. It is a beautiful book and makes my memories of Costa Rica come alive. It looks great on my coffee table too.
It is not just the amazing colours or the expressions on the creatures' faces that I love, it is the fact that this man must have slogged through a lot of mud so that I can read about it on my comfy sofa. Imagine all the insect bites that you will not have to endure; he has taken the hit for you. This book is bursting with wildlife and will give you multi-coloured dreams.Adrian Hepworth - I salute you.
